I was kept up most of last night pondering an age-old question. Several weeks ago, a friend of mine made a comment that we, as humans, are on this planet for sex and nothing more. This is a theory that I have commonly poked holes in, especially when those saying such are homosexuals like myself.
If humans are on this planet solely for sex, then that sex is to propagate the species, which makes homosexuals obsolete, and therefore all the bigots out there are right.
Of course, that theory can be disproved as well, seeing as if we look at Darwinism and natural selection and that bunch, there seem to be more and more homosexuals every year. This increase would seem to infer that homosexuals have fought to exist, and therefore do, but then that brings up other issues like “nature vs. nurture” and other such nonsense. But it does bring us to another theory: that everyone on this planet is here to love.
Simple, right? Not so. This theory also seems complicated and full of misnomers. Like which love counts: romantic or platonic? Does it matter if the love is requited or unrequited? Does the love between an owner and their pet qualify, seeing as how each would be fulfilling the roll of loving and being loved? And if you don’t find someone to love, does that make you obsolete, and therefore the world would be better off if you did natural selection a favor and did yourself in?
This last theory would help to explain depression and suicide a bit, especially if it were something for which each being is genetically programmed. It would explain how, therefore, some people who feel unloved or unable to receive love, if this programming does exist, why said people would try to kill themselves. They wouldn’t be fitting into their existing programming. As if living and love were as interconnected as the desire to eat and breath. And what of those who don’t find love? Should they have never been allowed to live?
Of course, nothing I’ve just said is scientifically valid. And there’s probably no way to really prove or disprove any of the above theories, unless you start to invoke something inane and improvable, such as religion. But no matter what, people’s lives will always revolve around sex and love, whether they are interconnected, intraconnected, or what have you. We’re all here for a reason; it would be nice to think that it’s because of love. Or would it not be so nice?
