so today, for the first time ever, i got to give advice on how to write a resignation letter. my friend amanda is quitting her job to go to another job, and she wanted to know what was the appropriate way to give two-weeks' notice. so i gave her my sage advice, since i've given notice oh so many times since i first started working in the "real world" oh so many years ago. except for when i worked in seguin. i didn't give notice there, partially because my boss was such a fucking uber-bitch that didn't deserve more than "i resign as of today. later."
so yeah, this was what i told amanda to do:
"... um, usually, a plain, straight-forward letter is best. just address it to your immediate supervisor (in your case, i guess it would be the news editor, right?), and state that you are giving your two-weeks' notice and give the reason why. then it's nice after you give your reason to say something like you hope you can return to the paper in the future after you've done what you are going to do. that's my advice. that's how i've written my quitting papers before ..."
good advice, eh?
