So this week was a little odd. I was off from work Monday and Tuesday (woohoo! 4-day weekend!). So Wednesday felt a lot like Monday. Thursday felt a lot like Wednesday because it was New Comic Day (which had to move since Wednesday was a holiday and UPS don't work on holidays). But Friday didn't feel like a Friday; it felt like ... Tuesday?
Now, I'm sure I'm not the only one out there that notices days of the week have certain feelings/associations to them. Monday is usually "Ugh, Monday," because you have to go back to work (assuming you work the usual Monday through Friday, which isn't always the case). Wednesday is usually "Woohoo! Week's almost over!" (and if you're into comic books, usually "Woohoo! New comics!"). Thursday is usually "Tomorrow's Friday; I can make it." Friday is usually "Woohoo! It's Friday! Is it 6 yet? Screw work; bring on the (insert liqour/vice of your choice)!" Saturday is usually "Woo! It's the weekend!" Sunday is usually trying to squeeze every last once out of the weekend and lamenting the impending Mondayness.
But what about Tuesday??? There's no real feeling to Tuesday; if there were, it would be just a feeling of ... being? Or just going through the motions? Or malaise? Maybe ennui describes it best.
Anyway. I've had this theory of the days for a while now, but it really cemented when I was working in Seguin back in 2004. Working there was what I described as living in a Perpetual Tuesday.
Here's why: every day was the fucking same!
There was never any feeling that anything different was going on ... at least until the last hour of work on Friday. But besides that one hour, every other hour of work throughout the week felt just like the other day. Everyone took their lunch break at the same time they always did. The three reporters were always at similar meetings that resulted in very similar sounding stories, only with different names and places. The sports editor was always off to some sporty thing. The opinions editor was always a dick. My boss was always a bitch with backhanded compliments and condescension. I did the same thing every day (blankly design pages; make the same corrections to the same errors the reporters always made; dealt with religious folk asking what church I went to; searching for another job).
The funny thing was, when I told the Perpetual Tuesday thing to the sports and city editors ... they totally agreed with me!
Anyway. I'll get back to my lazy Saturday of ripping my CDs to Slim and will commence my drinking at 7 sharp. Enjoy your Saturday!

i, for one, look forward to tuesday during the conventional school year. tuesday means gilmore girls and veronica mars. tuesday means girly glee.
i guess i forgot to include that in my theory. when you live in the world of perpetual tuesday, you always think the shows you see on tuesday are going to be on. try that five days a week. not very nice. always wanting more rory and lorelai and miss patty and morry. oh my.
