above the galley

during my junior and part of my senior year in high school, i hung out a lot with my friend laura, who went to another school in town. we were both "the" gay of our respective schools (even though we both had friends who were obviously gay but said they were straight, even when it was apparent they had something going on with another friend).

anyway. at some point, we started hanging out at this bar on south padre island called the upper deck. i guess it was a hotel bar, because it was part of this little hotel (motel? motel sounds so cheap and dirty) that catered to gays.

the upper deck was in no way like any other gay bar i've since gone to. which is a good thing. it was just a small bar. there was a jukebox with good music on it. it was very relaxed; there was no pretension.

it's what i felt every gay bar should be like. and it's a shame there isn't anything like it in austin. it would be nice if there were just like a small, neighborhood bar that oh so happened to be frequented by gays. where no dance music was allowed. maybe something like the draught house.

bah.
