teen girl influx

So TV Guide reported this week that Batgirl will make her debut on The Batman when it's new season premieres. While she will remain Barbara Gordon, daughter of police Commissioner James Gordon, there will be one major change: she will be a teenager. And so will Poison Ivy, who will be her first villian and a classmate.

On a similar note, Warner Bros. executives said this week that they're planning on turning Zatanna (for those of you who don't know who she is, she's a powerful magician in the DC universe, a member of the Justice League of America, and figured prominently into the last DC crossover titled Identity Crisis) into a movie. The catch is that she will either be a teen or a tween, and the movie will more than likely be a comedy.

Sigh. Why does everyone in the entertainment industry think that teen girls will make everything better, even in the animated genre? And why are three of my favorite comic book characters being bastardized, two of them for a second time (you'll note that Batgirl and Poison Ivy were first bastardized in Batman & Robin, which was a sham of a movie)? Why must they force feed us bullshit starring Hillary Duff, Lindsey Lohan, etc.? And why are some of my favorite comic book characters being bastardized? (OK, I know I already asked this question, but it begged to be repeated)

I'll hold out further judgment on Batgirl and Poison Ivy until the new season of The Batman debuts. I did the same for that cartoon, and then I started watching it and was blown away. However, the bastardization of Zatanna will forever be tainted in my head.
