so i've been a fan of wanda maximoff (aka the scarlet witch) for the longest time, even though she has one of the most convoluted histories in the marvel comics universe.
and it's only getting more convoluted this summer. not that it didn't already get more confusing this year.
see, wanda was the "cause" the the "avengers disassembled" storyline that took place earlier this year. basically, the only thing the story did was make wanda insane. which i thought was totally ludicrous. and i think some writers haven't done their research. or maybe i'm missing something.
see, one of my favorite scarlet witch stories is from the scarlet witch miniseries from the mid-90s. it took place right at the time when the avengers west coast disbanded and reformed as the ill-fated force works. but that scarlet witch mini not only gave wanda an awesome new look (that was sorely short-lived), it showed that she knew that she "created" her children via her mutant powers. although it was helped a little by master pandemonium. so, you know, this made me think that she knew all about that. but maybe i'm wrong. maybe she wasn't cognizant of it. and that's why bendis thought it best to make wanda the mastermind behind the avengers' downfall. having her go insane, kill her former mentor agatha harkness (who had connections all throughout the marvel u.), and kill some of her teammates.
which leads into this summer's cash cow, "the house of m." not that i'm not going to look into it, because, heck, it looks pretty darn nifty, but i can't help but feel that my fave character is being treated like a red-headed stepchild. which issomethign wanda totally doesn't deserve. wanda has always been one of the characters in the marvel u. that i feel has been terribly misused and abused. and this just seems to be the tip of the iceberg. although it is nice to tie her closer to the x-titles, considering she's the only one with magneto's genes to have not been a member of one of the multitude of x-teams. i mean, quicksilver was a member of x-factor and an unofficial member of the x-men directly after the whole "onslaught" storyline, and hell, magneto lead the x-men for a time. the closest wanda gets is by being the mother of nocturne in an alternate reality.
ok, i've totally bitched about this too long. and for all this space, i could've bitched about the whole how rachel summers is now rachel grey without any explanation. but that's another post. and i have more lone star to drink. ha.
