so i've received a couple of e-mails wanting to know about my whole name change and how it relates to the colleges i've attended. so here's the low-down on the two colleges i've spent the most time at.
University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College:
This institution started out as The Junior College of the Lower Rio Grande Valley (I shit you not) in 1926. In 1931, it became Brownsville Junior College. In 1950, it became Texas Southmost College. In 1973, it starts to get confusing. That's when it teamed up with then-Pan American University and became known as Texas Southmost College/Pan American University at Brownsville. In 1989, Pan Am joined the UT System, so thence the name changed once again to Texas Southmost College/University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville. Then, finally, in 1991, TSC ended its partnership with UTPA, but the portion of the university that was UTPA became known at UT-Brownsville, and TSC formed a partnership with this new entity, thus changing its name to how it is currently. Unfortunately, I learned all this while waiting several hours for a story on deadline day while working at the school paper, and heard some of it while I worked at the office of news and information.
Texas State University-San Marcos:
I still hate refering to my last former school by its current name. The school opened up in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School. In 1918, it became Southwest Texas State Normal College. In 1923, it became Southwest Texas State Teachers College. In 1959, it became Southwest Texas State College. In 1969, it became Southwest Texas State University. And then in 2003, despite strong feelings for and against it from students and alumni, it became Texas State University-San Marcos, but technically by law cannot be referred to as TSU or even TSUSM. Believe me; I found out the hard way. And unfortunately I learned all this info because I had to update the school's entry on the local stylebook while I was working at the school paper.
so yeah. if the instituions of higher education i have attended play any way into my blog, then my blog has many name changes to come. just wait and see. although, i AM still waiting to change the name a second time until i find something that fits better for where i am right now. ok, need to smoke.
