So like any other fanboy out there, I'm kinda looking forward to Mike Carey (he writes Ultimate Fantastic Four and Hellblazer) taking over the writing chores on X-Men with issue 188. You know, because I thought Milligan's run really sucked (even though I kept buying the issues and bitching about it, like many fanboys; I think all fanboys are really secretly into S&M, because there's no reason really to inflict this pain upon yourself). Anyway. So here's where I talk about the new team line-up.
So the line-up. Yeah. It's weird. But strangely leads itself to focusing on relationships between it's members. There's the bond between Cable and Cannonball, which developed years ago in the pages of X-Force. It's a very pseudo-father/son thing that's been kinda pushed to the side for a long time now, and it's nice to know that it might be touched upon again.
Of course, then there's the very real mother/daughter relationship between Rogue and Mystique. Mystique raised her, lead her in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, made Rogue absorb Ms. Marvel until the point of near death, then dropped her off at Xavier's because she couldn't help her with her powers. They have oodles of years of history and hate and love and family. And Rogue didn't want her to be an X-person. And she is. And they're on the same team. And Rogue's the leader. Which means ex-terrorist and murderer mother must take orders from professional hero daughter. Should be interesting. And, plus, one of Mystique's alleged reasons for wanting to join the X-Men was to rekindle her relationship with her daughter (and to instill in Rogue's head that Gambit ain't good for her, which is right), so let's see if they actually, you know, become all mother/daughter-y again.
And let's not forget that Mystique and Sabretooth had a child together. A human child that hated mutants, ran for president, and got killed (kinda) by his own mother. Of course, Sabretooth would've done the killing if he had the chance. And then they both did "serve" with X-Factor back when Forge had chips controlling them so they didn't do anything murderous or traitorous. (Yeah, that worked real swell, didn't it Forge?) Again, these two have history that goes back to World War II. And they've tried to kill each other on more than one occasion. And Sabretooth has tried to kill most of the roster on more than one occasion. And, well, wasn't Sabretooth allegedly dismembered by Wolverine off-panel towards the end of Chuck Austen's run? Hope that gets answered. And, plus, Sabretooth brings some of the Weapon X intrigue/dangling plots with him, especially since it looks like the team will be fighting Aurora and Northstar (who looks un-zombiefied now) in 188.
Then there's Rogue and Iceman, who had a wonderful friendship after the first time Rogue and Gambit broke up, going all road trippy and even having dinner with Bobby's parents. Hope they can continue this friendship.
And then there's the revelation this week in the letters page in Uncanny X-Men that the last member of the team will be Lady Mastermind. Which led me to wonder which Lady Mastermind it was, which led me to make the following comparison.
And then after wading through the comments on Mike Carey's website, I found out it was in fact Regan that would be joining the team, which I'm kinda bummed about. But it makes sense, I guess, seeing as how Regan isn't all too developed. And there would be some animosity between her and Rogue, although I'm sure there'll be enough animosity going around. But there's potential with Regan since she hasn't been developed. And, hey, maybe Martinique will show up as a villian later and we can have a Mastermind-off. That would be sweet.
Coming up, I'll bitch about the new line-up of Uncanny X-Men, how Joss Whedon may be fucking up Emma Frost, characters I'd like to see show up as supporting cast members in other, possibly non-X-related books, and exactly what the purpose of each X-book is. Yeah. That'll keep me occupied all summer. Plus, it'll give me incentive to use Photoshop and InDesign. OK, that's all. Shoo now.
