how is this news?

so i normally just scan the statesman online and not really read anything on there because, well, i hate the statesman. and now i hate them more. because of this article. other ad agencies are hiring people that were laid off from gsd&m. really? who'd've thunk that! wow! let's slap that on the home page! that's hot news!

you know, it makes me sick how people fawn over gsd&m. yes, i know they're the reason there're so many ad agencies in this town. and yes, it's sad that the agency had to let so many people go. but you know what? they won't be unemployed for long, because, you guessed it, they worked for gsd&m, which opens soooooooo many doors.

it reminds me of how, when i quit my last full-time job and they started interviewing replacements, of how the head copywriter made such a huge deal about one of the candidates having worked at gsd&m for four months. FOUR. FRICKING. MONTHS. who cares? i want to know why he was there for only four fucking months. it means he either sucked and they let him go or it was a temp. position. and sadly, that was the guy they got to replace me. and apparently he sucks. but he used to work at gsd&m! woo. fucking. hoo.

it's a case of poor little privileged kids. sure, most of those people probably worked hard to get employed by gsd&m and probably worked hard at gsd&m, but you know what? they worked there. that's what people are going to see on their resumes. they will be hired up almost immediately.

it also reminds me of how back in '03, the daily texan ran a front-page story (albeit below the fold) about how much money they made and how, although they do get money from student fees, they don't really need that money. the article pissed me off on so many points. i mean, first off all, how was that newsworthy? why was it on the front page? i even wrote a column about it for the swt paper. it just baffled me as a journalist.

maybe it's all just a case of jealousy. because i never worked for gsd&m. and because i haven't been able to find a steady gig since i quit my job back at the end of april. i don't have anything prestigious on my resume; i'm just a multiple college dropout who's lucked into most jobs he's gotten. same can be said about the daily texan situation; i was just angry that the texan was bragging, on their front page, about how they didn't need the student fees money, while the swt paper heavily relied on it.

but also, you know, other agencies in town have recently lost accounts and had to lay off people. but they didn't get articles in the statesman. lots of other people in the local advertising industry have lost their jobs, and maybe some of them are still looking for jobs, but, i don't know, it's like this article demeans those people because they weren't laid off from gsd&m.

gah.
