"The only standard that truly matters is the one you set for yourself ... And you cannot count on Prince Charming to make you feel better about yourself and take care of you, like some funhouse mirror that reflects you at twice your real size. ... Because Prince Charming may be driving a Honda and telling you that you have no equal ... but that won't do you much good when you've got kids and a mortgage ... and he has a beer gut and a wandering eye."
Ann Richards said this at Girls State back in 1993, and while it was specifically directed towards women, I think it's pretty much applicable to everyone. Ann, you'll be sorely missed (but not by the New York Times, which couldn't even bother to copy edit and fact check your obit before posting it on their website. But, apparently, congratulations for posthumously earning a law degree.)
UPDATE, 8:41 a.m.: I just sent this letter to the editor to the NY Times:
As a Texan and a former newspaper copy editor, I was ashamed to read your Ann Richard's obit first thing this morning. I'm sure you pretty much just picked up from the AP wire report, but that doesn't mean you couldn't do some proofing and fact checking before posting it to your Web site. I know in the newspaper business it's all about getting breaking news out there, but putting something so poorly constructed and researched out there for the general public to read does more of a disservice to those reading it. Ann Richards may not mean much to you New Yorkers, but she was pretty revolutionary here in Texas and one of the state's greatest Democrats. In closing, I guess I have to thank you for posthumously giving Ann a law degree; I'm sure if she were still with us, she'd get a laugh out of that.
